Smarter AV for connected teaching at the University of Waikato
Structured Technologies partnered with the University of Waikato to deliver the audiovisual systems for the redevelopment of J Block, configuring, installing and commissioning AV technology across 9 teaching rooms and 3 meeting rooms.
Designed in accordance with the University’s AV standards, the new systems provide consistent, intuitive technology across each space, while supporting both in-room and remote learning.

Meeting the Objectives
The primary objective was to create reliable, flexible teaching environments that support the way students learn today.
With remote participation and recorded teaching now an important part of university learning, each teaching space needed to provide a high-quality experience for students whether they were physically in the room or joining online.
Key Requirements
- Configure, install and commission AV systems across 9 teaching rooms and 3 meeting rooms
- Ensure all systems complied with University of Waikato AV standards
- Support seamless in-room and remote teaching
- Provide multiple camera views so remote students can clearly see lecturers and activity within the teaching space
- Enable easy content sharing and recording for future playback
- Integrate ceiling-mounted document cameras so physical teaching material can also be shared with online students
Challenges & Solutions
A key challenge was the project's short delivery timeframe, with all teaching spaces needing to be operational before classes commenced mid-July, 2026.
Structured Tech worked closely with Livingstone Construction, Feisst Electrical and our in-house Structured Technologies data team, who delivered the building's structured cabling infrastructure, to coordinate installation and commissioning alongside the wider construction programme.
Close collaboration between all project partners enabled the AV systems to be completed, tested and handed over on programme, ready for the start of Trimester B, 2026.
